  37.                            INSTALLATION
  38.  
  39. The  OPPLD  program  and data files must be installed on the same 
  40. drive  and directory as the OWL Personal Portfolio Manager (OPPM) 
  41. program.    Copy   OPPLD.EXE,  OPPLD.DBF  and  OPPLD.HLP  to  the 
  42. drive\directory  where  OPPM.EXE  is installed.  Example:  if you 
  43. are  currently  using  version 4.2 of OPPM and it is installed on 
  44. your C: drive use the following commands:

  51.                      DOWNLOADING STOCK QUOTES
  52.  
  53. OPPLD  supports  loading  stock,  bond  and  mutual  fund  quotes 
  54. downloaded  from  Compuserve,  Prodigy,  GEnie  and the Dow Jones 
  55. News  Retrieval.   The  program  has  specific  requirements  for 
  56. download  file  formats  and  contents which are described in the 
  57. following paragraphs.

  60. DOWNLOADING FROM COMPUSERVE
  61.  
  62. Current   stock   quotes  can  be  obtained  from  Compuserve  by 
  63. selecting   the   Quotes   option  in  the  services  menu.   The 
  64. Compuserve  software  permits you to predefine the ticker symbols 
  65. for  the  quotes  you  want to retrieve.  Once you have defined a 
  66. group  of  ticker  symbols, select the "Quotes" option to display 
  67. the current quotes for all predefined issues.  
  68.  
  69. To  download  these quotes to your hard disk select the "SAVE AS" 
  70. option in the file menu and enter a file name.  
  71.  
  72. Compuserve frequently lists quotes with an update time and no date
  73. associated  with the  quote.  For this reason,  OPPL assumes  that 
  74. quotes loaded are for the user entered date i.e.(the "From" date).
  75.

  77. DOWNLOADING FROM PRODIGY
  78.  
  79. Current  quotes can be obtained from the Prodigy Quote Track page 
  80. (Jump  -  Quote  Track).   Within quote track, you must establish 
  81. one  or  more  "Tracks" containing the ticker symbols you want to 
  82. download.   Prodigy's  tracks are limited to 15 issues per track.  
  83. If  you  are  tracking  more  than 15 issues we suggest using the 
  84. Hard  Disk  track.   The  hard disk track is limited to 50 issues 
  85. per  track.   Consult Prodigy's help screens for more information 
  86. on establishing tracks.

  88. After   establishing  your  track(s),  select  the  report  setup 
  89. option.   Setup  your  report  options  to output the report to a 
  90. "delimited  file"  (  *.CSV  format).   If  you will be importing 
  91. quotes  to OPPM from several Prodigy sessions at one time, select 
  92. the  append  option  in  the report setup.  Alternatively, if you 
  93. will  be  importing quotes to OPPM each time you download, select 
  94. the overwrite option.

  96. Prodigy  permits  you  to  save report setups for either a single 
  97. session  or  for  all  future  sessions.   To save time in future 
  98. Prodigy  sessions,  we suggest that you make this setup permanent 
  99. for all prodigy sessions.
  100.  
  101. Once  your quote track and report setup has been saved, it is not 
  102. necessary  to  modify  these  for  future  sessions.  To download 
  103. quotes,  open  your  quote  track  (FILE MENU) and run the report 
  104. option (FILE MENU).

  107. DOWNLOADING FROM GENIE
  108.  
  109. Closing  stock  and  mutual  fund  quotes  can  be obtained using 
  110. GEnie's  *BASIC services.  Type "M8008;1" at any GEnie page to go 
  111. to  the  closing  quotes  page.   Before  selecting the option to 
  112. retrieve  closing  quotes,  set  your  communications  program to 
  113. begin logging output to a file.  
  114.  
  115. Enter  up to 30 ticker symbols of the stocks and mutual funds you 
  116. want  to  retrieve.   After retrieving up to 30 quotes the "Enter 
  117. Ticker   Symbol(s)"  prompt  will  reappear  and  you  may  enter 
  118. additional  ticker  symbols  until  you have retrieved quotes for 
  119. all of the stocks and mutual funds you are tracking.

  121. Once  you  have  retrieved  all  of your closing quotes, set your 
  122. modem communications program to stop logging.
  123.  
  124.      Note:   depending on your modem communications program, much 
  125.      of  this process can be automated through the use of scripts 
  126.      or   command   files.    Check  the  documentation  of  your 
  127.      communications program for details.
  128.  
  129. The  ticker  symbols for stocks and mutual funds you are tracking 
  130. using  OPPM must match the ticker symbol, type and class shown in 
  131. the  GEnie  closing quotes.  This is entered in the ticker symbol 
  132. field in OPPM as:

  145. Note  that all mutual funds have a type of "X".  This type should 
  146. be ignored and NOT included in the OPPM ticker symbol field:

  157. DOWNLOADING FROM DOW JONES NEWS RETRIEVAL (DJNR)
  158.  
  159. OPPLD  supports  quotes retrieved from Dow Jones News Retrieval's 
  160. current  quotes  (//CQ),  historical  quotes (//HQ) and Dow Jones 
  161. Averages (//DJA) databases.
  162.  
  163. //HQ:   The  historical quotes database allows you to retrieve up 
  164. to  one year's worth of daily quotes for stocks.  After selecting 
  165. the  HQ database set your communications program to begin logging 
  166. to  a  new  file.   Enter  the  symbol  of  the stock you want to 
  167. retrieve  quotes  for  followed  by "P1" e.g.(IBM P1).  DJNR will 
  168. display  12 days of quotes for the selected stock.  Each time you 
  169. press  the  return  key,  the preceding 12 days of quotes will be 
  170. displayed  until  a  full  year's  of quotes have been displayed.  
  171. After  you  have  retrieved all the quotes you are interested in, 
  172. set  your  communications program to stop logging.  Note, you may 
  173. save historical quotes for multiple stocks to a single log file.

  175. //CQ:   The  current  quotes  database  allows  you  to  retrieve 
  176. current  quotes for stocks and mutual funds.  After selecting the 
  177. CQ  database  set your communications program to begin logging to 
  178. a  new  file.  Enter the symbols of the stock or mutual funds you 
  179. want  to  retrieve  current  quotes  for.   You may enter up to 5 
  180. symbols  at  a  time  separated  by  a  space.  DJNR will display 
  181. current  quotes  for  each selected security.  You may enter more 
  182. symbols  as  needed.   After  you  have retrieved all the current 
  183. quotes  you are interested in, set your communications program to 
  184. stop  logging.   Note,  do  not  save current quotes for multiple 
  185. dates  in the same log file.  Since the DJNR CQ database does not 
  186. display  the  date,  OPPLD is unable to distinguish the date that 
  187. the quote applies to.
  188.  
  189. //DJA:   The  Dow  Jones Averages database allows you to retrieve 
  190. up  to one year's worth of daily quotes for the various Dow Jones 
  191. Averages.    After   selecting   the   DJA   database   set  your 
  192. communications  program  to  begin  logging to a new file.  Enter 
  193. the  symbol  of  the  average  you  want  to  retrieve quotes for 
  194. followed  by  "P1"  e.g.(DJI  P1).   DJNR will display 12 days of 
  195. quotes  for the selected average.  Each time you press the return 
  196. key,  the  preceding  12 days of quotes will be displayed until a 
  197. full  year's  of  quotes  have  been  displayed.   After you have 
  198. retrieved  all  the  quotes for a selected Dow Jones Average, set 
  199. your  communications  program to stop logging.  Note, do not save 
  200. different  averages  to the same log file.  OPPLD reduces volumes 
  201. of  Dow  Jones  Averages  by  a  factor  of 10.  When loaded, DJA 
  202. volumes  are  in  units of thousands instead of hundreds as shown 
  203. in the DJA download file.

  206.                           RUNNING OPPLD
  207.  
  208. Before  running OPPLD be sure to review the applicable section of 
  209. this   guide   on   downloading   quotes.    OPPLD  has  specific 
  210. requirements  for  file  formats  and file contents which must be 
  211. met  to  avoid  the  possibility of introducing invalid data into 
  212. your database.
  213.  
  214. Once  you have captured a file containing closing quotes, you can 
  215. run  OPPLD  to  import these prices into the OPPM price database.  
  216. To   run   OPPLD   set   your   default  drive\directory  to  the 
  217. drive\directory  where  OPPM  and  OPPLD  are  installed and type 
  218. "OPPLD".  Example:

  224. The  program  has  6 options which are described in the following 
  225. paragraphs.

  227.  
  228. IMPORT CLOSING QUOTES
  229.  
  230. This  option  reads  a  file  containing captured closing quotes, 
  231. checks  the ticker symbols against your OPPM database and creates 
  232. a  temporary  database  of  prices.   Only those quotes that have 
  233. ticker  symbols matching the ticker symbols in your OPPM database 
  234. are  accepted.   In  addition, any quotes that are not within the 
  235. date span that you specify will be ignored.

  237. Before  selecting  this option, be sure that the current setup is 
  238. for  the  file  type  you will be loading.  See Set Import Format 
  239. below.
  240.  
  241. After  selecting  this  option,  enter  the name of the file that 
  242. contains  the  closing  quotes  you  want  to  load.   Be sure to 
  243. include  the  full drive and path specification when entering the 
  244. file name.
  245.  
  246. Once  you  have  correctly  entered the file name, enter the date 
  247. span  you  want  loaded.   DO  NOT  INCLUDE  DATES THAT HAVE BEEN 
  248. PREVIOUSLY  LOADED.   Loading  closing  quotes  for the same date 
  249. more  than  once  will  cause  invalid  volume  data in your OPPM 
  250. database  (the  volume  of  shares  will  be too high because the 
  251. repeated day's volume will be added more then once).

  253. Closing  quotes  are  not  committed  to  the OPPM price database 
  254. until  you  exit  the program.  Multiple closing quotes files can 
  255. be imported by reselecting this option.
  256.  
  257.  
  258. BROWSE CLOSING QUOTES
  259.  
  260. This  option  allows  you  to  view the closing quotes which have 
  261. been  read  and  accepted by the program using the Import Closing 
  262. Quotes  option.   This  allows  you  to preview the imported data 
  263. before it is committed to the OPPM price database.
  264.

  266. ABANDON CLOSING QUOTES
  267.  
  268. If  you  made  an  error and imported the wrong file or specified 
  269. the  wrong  date  span, you can abandon all closing quotes in the 
  270. temporary  database  by selecting this option.  This will prevent 
  271. erroneously  loaded closing quotes from being written to the OPPM 
  272. Price database.

  275. SET IMPORT FORMAT
  276.  
  277. Before  using the Import Closing Quotes option, check the current 
  278. setup  in  the  upper  right corner of the display to insure that 
  279. file  format  is properly set.  If not, use this option to select 
  280. the type of file you will be importing.

  282.  
  283. SET QUOTE YEAR
  284.  
  285. Since  the  closing  quotes  output  by  GEnie and Compuserve are 
  286. coded  with  the month and day only, the program assumes that the 
  287. year  of  the quotes is equal to the year set in your system.  If 
  288. this  is  not the case, select this option to specify the year of 
  289. the quotes to be imported.

  292. COMMIT DATA & EXIT
  293.  
  294. This  option  will commit all closing quote data in the temporary 
  295. database  to  the  OPPM  price database and exit the program.  If 
  296. the  temporary database is empty (no files loaded or you selected 
  297. the  Abandon  Closing  Quotes  option  after loading your closing 
  298. quotes files) the program will simply exit to DOS.
